Whitsundays tour from Hamilton Island, Airlie Beach and beyond: how to reach the boats

Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine is the mainland airport, about forty kilometres inland from Airlie Beach, with direct flights from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. A shuttle bus meets every flight and runs to Airlie Beach hotels in about thirty-five minutes; taxis and hire cars are at the terminal. Hamilton Island Airport is on the island itself, in the middle of the group, with direct flights from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Cairns. It is the right airport if you are staying on Hamilton Island; for the boats on this page it adds a ferry, because the listings here all depart from the mainland. The Cruise Whitsundays ferry runs several times a day between the island marina and Port of Airlie and takes about an hour, through the same channels the sailing yachts use.

Either way, plan to arrive the day before an overnight sail. The yachts board in the early afternoon and a morning flight plus a shuttle plus a check-in is a tight fit.

Hamilton Island has its own day boats to Whitehaven, run from the island marina, and they are a good answer if you are staying there and want the beach for a morning. The boats on this site are the Airlie Beach fleet, which is the larger one, with the overnight yachts, the raft boats, the outer reef pontoon and the flights, and reaching it from the island is a ferry ride.

The Cruise Whitsundays ferry leaves Hamilton Island Marina for Port of Airlie several times a day, first thing in the morning and through to the evening; the crossing takes about an hour and the fare is a fraction of any tour on this page. Port of Airlie is where most of the day cruises depart, so a morning ferry connects with a day cruise on the same day, with a coffee in between. For an overnight sail, take an afternoon ferry the day before and stay a night in Airlie Beach.

Book the ferry when you book the tour, and check the listing for its departure time. The eco-cruise at $178 and the Hill Inlet day at $170 both leave Port of Airlie mid-morning, which the first ferry makes comfortably.

Airlie Beach has two departure points a fifteen-minute walk apart along the foreshore. Port of Airlie is at the eastern end of town, beside the ferry terminal, and most of the large day catamarans leave from there: the eco-cruise, the Hill Inlet day, the outer reef pontoon boat. Coral Sea Marina is at the western end, past the lagoon, and the sailing yachts, the raft boats and the Camira catamaran leave from there.

Every listing states its meeting point and time, and the day cruises with hotel pickup say so on the listing; if yours does, a minibus collects you and the marina is somebody else’s problem. If it does not, both marinas are a flat walk from anywhere in town and a short taxi from the hotels on the hill.

Arrive thirty minutes before departure at either. The overnight yachts run a check-in on the pontoon, and the day boats board in order of arrival.

The day cruises leave Airlie Beach between seven and half past nine, depending on the boat, and are back between four and six. Hotel pickups run about forty minutes before departure. From Hamilton Island the first ferry of the morning reaches Port of Airlie with time to spare for the mid-morning boats; for the earliest catamarans, come across the evening before.

The overnight yachts board in the early afternoon and return around lunchtime on the last day, which leaves the afternoon free for a flight home from Proserpine or the ferry back to the island. Whatever the plan, give the Whitsundays a spare night at the start. Weather, a late flight or a full ferry are all easier to absorb with an evening in Airlie Beach in hand.
